The 6th Lustrum of the working party international safe motherhood and reproductive health – 30 years of moving forward, together

In the morning session of this symposium we will pay attention to the collaboration the Working Party set up with
partners in Gondar area in Northern Ethiopia: Charles Ameh from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine will lecture
about the Life Saving Skills in Emergency Obstetric Care training program, Tigist Mamo from World Vision Ethiopia
will give an overview of the community programs in Gondar area, Birhanu Abera from Gondar University Hospital
will give his views of the collaboration and Dutch members of the Working Party will present ongoing research
activities.
In the afternoon session 4 PhD-candidates (3 of them will defend their theses during the week before the
symposium!) will present their studies, which are all directed at improving access and quality of maternal and
neonatal health services. The presenters in the afternoon-session are all employees of the John Hopkins Institute for
Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics (Jhpiego), an international non-profit health organization affiliated with The
Johns Hopkins University.
At the end of the symposium Dr. Harshad Sanghvi, the Chief Medical Officer of Jhpiego will address the audience
with his keynote lecture about the role of (implementation) research in low and middle income countries.
Is it time for a party afterwards? Yes, it is!!
Some of the younger members of the Working Party have organised a great party with drinks, dinner, music, dancing
and most probably even some surprises that even I do not know about yet.
