Women’s childbirth experience and her experience of the first week postpartum: is there a relationship?

Geplaatst op

Rationale: Both a negative childbirth experience and having depressive feelings in the first week postpartum are important predictors for developing a postpartum depression (PPD).

However, the relation between these two factors is scarcely investigated. This research explores the relationship between a woman’s childbirth experience and her experience of the first week postpartum.

Method: The Childbirth Perception Scale (CPS) was used to measure the childbirth experience (subscale 1) and the experience of the first week postpartum (subscale 2). A higher score indicated a more positive experience in both scales. Averages per subscale were calculated. A Pearson correlation analysis checked the level of correlation between the subscales. A multivariable linear regression analyses was performed to adjust for education level, mode of birth, place of birth and parity.

Results/conclusions: 544 women filled out the questionnaire, 301 (55,3%) primiparae and 243 (44,7%) multiparae. A significant correlation was found between childbirth experience and the experience of the first week postpartum (r=0,37; p<0,001). The relationship was slightly stronger for primiparae (β= 0,38; 95% BI: 0,26-0,51; p<0,001) compared to multiparae (β= 0,36; 95% BI: 0,23-0,49;p<0,001).

Implications of findings: This research shows that there is a relation between women’s childbirth experience and the experience of the first week postpartum. Further research is needed on the influence of the childbirth experience and the experience of the first week postpartum on the development of PPD. Gained knowledge can be used in the development of interventions for PPD prevention.
